RICK'S BIG TRIP page 14 Yes,
I should admit that there’s a marginally entertaining element in the fall of
modern man. Wasn’t it sweet baby James who said, “Since we’re on our way back
down, we might as well enjoy the ride”? Here’s an idiotic idea: a case to
carry a, presumably living, human being in. There it is, all finished with
latches and labels. Isn’t it a lovely ride? |
|
|
And
here’s the culprit that started the whole thing: Duchamp with his stupid “I
can say a urinal is a work of art if I want to.” Somebody was recently trying
to prove that this was not an ordinary urinal, but one that Duchamp cleverly
designed to look like an ordinary urinal. So what’s the point? It
could be worth even more money! Yahoo! |

Somebody
take me away from the long dead modern art argument! The Pompidou Center also
has a lot of displays of architecture and design – something we really can
use in everyday life. I photographed this one because it’s a design for the
Jewish museum in Berlin. That’s where I’m going on my next big excursion.
Strange design, eh? |

|
Well, I
saw the whole museum, and I wish I could show you all the really rather
interesting pieces I came across, but no, this is only a web page. That evening
I took a little trip out to the Monmartre. Here’s a lovely road leading up
the hill – ivy everywhere. |
|
|
The
Monmartre is a big tourist center. Street portrait artists (they make your
skin look very smooth!), eating spots…I peered into one restaurant and saw
this burned out old fellow, with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth,
playing noisy piano as people rush by. That’s what I do…and I’m so glad I
don’t have his job! I think I’ll just keep working in Palm Springs. |

|
Just to
offer a little historic perspective. Did I say perspective? It’s taken
a long time for humanity to master the details of the human form. But
everybody knows – ancient Egyptians or modern Parisians – what sells museum
tickets. |
