RICK'S BIG TRIP page 18 Parting
shot of Dance Valley. Clouds begin to form above the enormous inflated figure
of a woman lazily smoking a cigarette. Big lips…Monica says these were props
from a Stones concert. |

And
parting shot from the Muiderpoort train station, Amsterdam. Lovely town,
that. |

|
Back in
Utrecht, bicycle riding through the fields. I saw this beautiful and unusual
horse wearing “big boots.” In the background is German bunker from WW II.
These things stand all over the countryside, in defense against the allied
attack. Of course, we tricked them and attacked at Normandy. Good plan, but
it was a long suffering winter before northern Holland was liberated. The
bunkers stand as an all-pervasive memorial to those bad old days. |

And
here’s the painting I did last night. Doesn’t look very good in the picture,
I know. These little web pictures are so…limiting! |
|
|
While you’re waiting for my next instalment,
here’s a little reflection on the trip so far: This is me sitting behind the computer of
Ruth and Jo, at Alphen aan den Rijn. It was here that I first discovered the
secret of uploading pictures from my digital camera. Sorry you can’t see what
we look like: It’s those limitations again. |

And
that’s me with Ruth and her sister, Romy. We’re having a little snack on the
streets of Alphen, a.k.a., Smalltown, Holland. I was having a glass of what
they call “Lipton Ice Tea.” It comes in a special sort of brandy snifter
glass with little gradation marks on the side, so the server makes the right
mix. It’s prepared with bubbly water – a strange and un-tea-like twist on the
ice tea experience. We also had “toasties,” which are grilled cheese
sandwiches, prepared not on the grill but in a special sandwich toaster – a toastieijzer,
which means “toastie iron.” So many weird variations on ordinary food! |
