Salzburg is a beautifully laid-out old place, dominated by the largest fortress in  Europe, Hohensalzburg.
(featured recently in the film, The Red Violin -- if you happen to have seen that). Anneke and I took a good look at the castle, which has been a military base for centuries, and is now largely converted into a museum. Here's a view from one of the windows, looking down on Salzburg.
Here are some ancient punishment devices, mostly painful and humiliating masks that lock onto the head. The piece at the bottom right is a chastity belt (also, not comfortable).
And here is a spooky sculpture Anneke took a liking to.

And let me present the most tacky postcard I was able to find in all of Europe. Yes, Salzburg is the home of the Von Trapp Family in the Sound of Music. There they are, crudely cut out and pasted onto the cityscape.
Later in the afternoon, we lucked into a live performance in the park (Mirabell Garten) of some traditional folk dances with orchestra.
And, yes, we did see the Mozart birthplace and home, with his first viola and such artifacts, including this famous portrait (below).
