Out in the U.S., most of you were probably unaware that the entire European continent was going through a major Astronomical mania, namely Eclipse Madness. As you see on the map, the Solar Eclipse of 1999 cut right through the heart of Europe, and everyone was clamoring to get a good view -- see the eclipse in its totality. Pictured left is my eclipse viewing glasses laid over a (German) eclipse pamphlet. The spot we actually drove to was just south of Belgium, near the French town of Cambra. We got there just in time to see the eclipse in its totality, briefly because we were just on the edge of the total viewing region. Here we are, all looking up at right into the sun. A cloudy day all over Europe, but we were lucky to have an opening just long enough to see the eclipse! As I look through my eclipse glasses, the rest are viewing the sun through another safe medium: an ordinary CD. Total eclipse: Darkness in the middle of the day. Very strange.
